Tottenham decided not to sign rapid winger on deadline day, now he’s barely playing

Tottenham considered Gelson Martins on deadline day and the speedy winger is really struggling for minutes with Monaco.

Tottenham did most of their summer business early but were looking at signing one more winger.

Valencia wanted to re-sign Bryan Gil on loan and there was plenty of interest in Lucas Moura.

Tottenham ended up keeping both players and decided not to sign a winger despite showing an interest in one.

Tottenham considered Gelson Martins

Sky Sports reported on deadline day that Tottenham were considering a late deal for Monaco winger Gelson Martins.

It was suggested that Martins was brought up in a late transfer meeting and Tottenham weighed up a deal.

Later in the day, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas claimed that Tottenham weren’t convinced enough by Martins to go through with a move.

Martins may well wish the deal had gone through now, given his lack of playing time this season.

Martins has played just four times in Ligue 1 this season for a total of just 109 minutes.

It’s not much better in the Europa League either, where Martins has played just once and that was only for 29 minutes.

Martins was an unused substitute in four Europa League games; once against Red Star and Trabzonspor as well as twice against Ferencvaros.

The 27-year-old wide man has also been an unused substitute in five Ligue 1 games, struggling to make any kind of impact under Philippe Clement.

Martins is a rapid winger with blistering pace but his end product has often let him down, managing just 16 goals and 14 assists in 21 games for Monaco.

Tottenham surely need another winger in January and if they have a rethink about Martins, he will surely be available.

Yet having decided against Martins just over two months ago, the door to Tottenham may now be closed for the former Sporting star.
